Jan Voerman sr. – Resting IJssel Cattle

Discover 'Resting IJssel Cattle', part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. This design is based on a work by Jan Voerman sr., the painter who spent his entire life capturing the IJssel flood plains near Hattem, earning him the title 'the Painter of the IJssel'.

Voerman was born in Kampen in 1857 as the son of a cattle farmer. Cows were his childhood; he grew up among the animals. Later, he painted those same cows from his studio house on the IJssel, overlooking the flood plains where his own herd grazed. He barely left Hattem for the rest of his life. Of his home, he once said: 'Whoever lives in paradise never wants to leave.'

The sock captures exactly the stillness of his work: wide green meadows, a clear summer sky, and a group of cows quietly resting in the grass. No rush. Just the IJssel landscape, exactly as Voerman saw it, knitted into every green and blue thread.
