Jan Mankes and Charley Toorop both worked in the first half of the 20th century, but chose radically different paths. Mankes sought the tranquillity and simplicity of the Frisian landscape, died of tuberculosis at the age of 30, and left behind a small but perfect oeuvre. Toorop lived to the age of 64, was a powerhouse in the art world, and worked her entire life in an expressive-realistic style that was entirely her own.

Museum MORE has the largest collection of Dutch Modern Realism in the world. These four works – Mankes' serene Row of Trees and mysterious Great Owl, Toorop's explosive Vase with Flowers and symbolic Beemster Blossom – are among the absolute highlights of their collection.
