Three animals from art history in one set

A parakeet by Henri Matisse, a hippo from an Egyptian tomb and a hare by Albrecht Dürer. Almost four thousand years lie between the oldest and the youngest artwork.

Matisse cut The Parakeet and the Mermaid out of coloured paper in 1952, during his famous cut-out period. The small, bright blue faience hippo comes from Egypt's Middle Kingdom and is decorated with lotus flowers. The Egyptians believed figurines like this helped the deceased to be reborn, but they often broke the legs off, so the animal could not turn on the deceased in the afterlife. We made that design together with the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. And Dürer made his Young Hare in 1502, so lifelike that the animal seems to have leapt straight out of nature.

The patterns are knitted in, not printed: the colours are part of the sock itself. 80% organic cotton, 15% polyamide and 5% elastane.
