Fruit trees in full bloom, chickens scratching in the grass beneath them, and a sky you can almost smell. Van Doren painted it outdoors, on the spot, with a loose touch – the blossom is suggested rather than drawn.

Emile Van Doren (Brussels 1865 – Genk 1949) came to Genk in the early 1890s and never left. He fell in love with two things at once: the Kempen landscape and Cidonie Raikem, who ran an inn on the Stationsstraat. Together they turned it into the Hôtel des Artistes, where every travelling painter stayed. From then on he painted just one subject: the heath, fens and sand dunes around Genk.

We translated the canvas into knitted stitches: a moss-green foot for the grass, a light blue cuff for the sky, and in between the blossoming trees with the chickens beneath them. Knitted in, not printed, right down to the loose white feathers in the grass – the colours are part of the sock itself, so they don't fade.

'Verger en fleurs' · oil on canvas, 70 × 50.5 cm · collection Emile Van Dorenmuseum, Genk.

A one-time run of 700 pairs.
