He painted one landscape, over and over: the heath, fens and sand dunes of the Kempen. And he did so while watching it disappear – in 1901 coal was discovered beneath Belgian Limburg. Van Doren took a seat on the Royal Commission for Monuments and Landscapes and became an advocate for the landscape he painted.
